Valpo was founded in 1859, and it is academically organized into 5 undergraduate colleges, a law school and a graduate school. The university is owned and operated by the Lutheran University Association, which is a non-profit corporation, recognized as the largest independent Lutheran university in USA. The athletic teams from Valpo are known as the Valparaiso Crusaders, who compete in 18 varsity sports in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I, in the Horizon League, in all sports, except football, which is not sponsored by the conference, the football team being a member of the Pioneer Football League. Most the athletic events are held in ARC (Athletics-Recreation Center), which is the primary sporting facility on campus.
There are more than 50 000 Valpo alumni living worldwide, among the most resonant names on the list being: Beulah Bondi – actress, Paul Chambers - CNN anchor/film critic, Ray Scherer - NBC White House correspondent, Chris Bauman - CEO of FanFound and well known activist for independent music, Mikhail Borodin - Soviet and Comintern representative to China, as well as many other people who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
